係 vs 喺 — is versus at?

The rule: identity → 係 (hai6); location → 喺 (hai2). English hides this — I am a student and I am at school both use am. Cantonese splits them: 我係學生 vs 我喺學校. Tone 6 (low, flat) versus tone 2 (rising) is the whole difference in speech.

Variations

The mistake to avoid

Writing 你係邊度 for "where are you" — the single most common beginner slip. If the answer is a place, the verb is 喺. Drill the pair aloud until tone 6 versus tone 2 is automatic: 係學生 / 喺學校.
